The Rhino battery platform, designed for heavy industrial machinery, has achieved a significant industry certification, IEC 62619. The Rhino Platform, which serves as the basis for Celltech’s specialised customer-specific battery systems, significantly advances off-road machinery safety and design. The certification not only affirms the platform’s robust architecture and implementation but also demonstrates its successful application in real-world settings by our customers. The certification was carried out by DEKRA, the world’s largest independent non-listed expert organisation in the testing, inspection and certification sector.

Rhino Certification Scope

Our team has been diligently working for the past two years to ensure the Rhino platform complies with the strict international requirements needed by off-road equipment. The work has resulted in the platform receiving a certification under IEC 62619, thus complying with electrical safety and mechanical requirements.

In addition, the platform has been functional safety certified according to ISO 13849 achieving performance level D, PLd for safety functions.

IEC 62619 sets the safety criteria for secondary lithium cells and batteries used in industrial applications. The safety standards are essential for batteries used in off-road machinery. Complementing this, Rhino’s Battery Management System (BMS) meets the stringent requirements of ISO 26262 for automotive applications, which are crucial for municipal services.

Critical Steps in Achieving IEC 62619 Certification

The certification process has taken two years and hundreds of man-hours to complete. Our product compliance, safety and design engineers have all been involved in making sure that the certifications are not only applicable to a single customer product but to the platform architecture that will be used as a foundation for the battery systems of our future customers.

Risk Assessment and Reduction

Risk reduction strategies essential for the product were carefully considered and integrated during the conceptual phase, detailed in the platform’s design, and presented to DEKRA, the certification authority. Following the concept phase, further design refinements were made, supported by our own analyses and assessments. This process included the submission of design documents and extensive documentation related to verification and validation, ensuring comprehensive test coverage and high-quality testing.

Testing Protocols

IEC 62619 compliance was ensured through multiple tests. The tests covered both the cells and the battery system.

The tests encompassed four key areas: mechanical durability, electrical safety, functional safety, and mitigation against foreseeable misuse.
The misuse tests included a short-circuit test, drop test, mechanical damage tests, thermal tests, and tests for over-charge and over-discharge scenarios.

Additional testing

In addition, we have completed extensive performance testing, both internally and with external partners. The testing includes simulations tailored to our customers’ charging cycles, physical testing based on those cycles, vibration tests, load testing, and ingress protection (IP) testing

Strategic Partnership with DEKRA

We achieved certification by working in close cooperation with DEKRA, our certifying partner. Choosing DEKRA was a strategic decision and a crucial part of this process. Our collaboration began already in 2019 with the certification of products based on our Turtle platform. This certification process was completed at the end of the year 2022.
